Week 25- Hope

Hope is the thing with feathers that perches in the soul, or hope is the root of all evils that prolongs the torments of man. For we hope all our writers and readers continue with us and hope we get others too to write on our new topic– Hope. For after all, “hope is a good thing. maybe the best of good things. and no good thing ever dies”.

Samita walked back to her house, from the mall after finishing off her duty as a janitor where her four kids and husband awaited her return. As soon as she entered her small 1 BHK flat, Vimi her eldest daughter informed her that her father had come home in a drunken state as usual.

Samita gestured Vimi to move into the hall and asked her to take her sisters and the youngest brother along. Samita entered the bedroom where her husband, Raj lay drunk and blabbering. Suddenly he got up and started asking her for money, she quietly closed the bedroom door and started arguing.

A terrified Vimi started consoling the three year old, Satish who had started crying after hearing the commotion in the bedroom. As she paced up and down with Satish in her arms the noises died and a teary and bruised Samita came out of the bedroom and entered the kitchen without saying a word. After bearing the brunt of her husband’s rage she makes dinner for the whole family.

Raj calmly eats the food but along with it lauding Samita with praises of her delicious food and also assuring her that he loves her.

An elated Samita then clears out the dishes and the family retires for the night. At night after thinking about the day’s events, Samita hopes her love for Raj will change him. A ray of optimism hits her and she murmurs “he still loves me, he will change” and dozes off.

After 15 years of this marriage, Hope is the only thing that keeps timid, devoted wives like Samita still bound in such a violent relationship, many such victims of domestic violence still “hope” things will change and thus keep mum about the ordeals their partners put them through.

Are Samita’s hopes that Raj will mend his ways justified by the amount of bruises she gets every day?

Hope gets the better of her and plunging into its dungeons, she continues to live such a life every single day, dreaming, “hoping” someday things would be different, while being miles away from the harsh realities.

‘A man begins to die when he ceases to expect anything from tomorrow.'

Hope, a shining beacon of prosperity to some and a miserable version of torment to others. The whole concept is so ambiguous that a debate would last forever. The irony is that we lose hope in the moment when we need it the most. The drive to hold on, to try, to care just a little more even when all seems lost, that is hope.

Whenever if think of hope, the beautiful line from Les Misérables comes to my mind 'The word which God has written on the brow of every man is Hope'. I once asked a dear pessimistic friend of mine 'Why don't you like hope?' the answer was 'I don't know how you can like it, it is so unrealistic'. I asked again ' So you don't have hope at all?’ the answer was ' I have hope, I have hope in me'. The profoundness of the sentence struck me later. Hope is a light which pervades the darkness of any and every situation and heart, though hard to believe it is the logical choice every time. Life starts and ends with hope, we are born with a hope to live and we die with a hope to be born again.

Many people think that hope leads to nothing but disappointments. But they are missing the whole point, hope is something which you never give up. If you never give up hope there will be no disappointments, period. As it takes just a tiny spark to light a fire, all it takes is a little bit of hope to make life as wonderful as it should be.

To all those pessimists out there, hope is not a crutch of the pathetic, it is the virtue of those who are strong and sane enough to believe in it. Take away hope from a man's heart and he becomes a beast of prey. Hope is the savior of humanity, a surge of strength which destroys all weakness. Those who don't understand or accept that, well let’s just hope they do!

Perspiration poured down my brow, in gallons. It felt as if someone held a Glock pistol on my forehead.

The big stage! The pressure! What would the people say? How will I handle the questions?

“Last ball to go!” the umpire yelled. Six more needed. If we lost, then I’d never again…

Off my bat, went the ball flying high into the air! And I hoped, maybe, just maybe…

# Life. A Hope.

Hope gets you through,
When there are no reasons enough true,
There are no choices enough new,
Yet hope gets you through.

Hope keeps you alive,
When there's no one along to survive,
Why is there a need to strive?
Still hope keeps you alive.

Hope makes you believe,
Because you have a reason to live,
Many a threads you can weave,
As hope makes you believe.

Hope lets you cry,
For those who failed to try,
Many a times they might die,
Hence, hope lets you cry.

Hope teaches you to forgive,
What is in to take if you can give?
The longer you might live,
When hope teaches you to forgive.

Hope brings you a new tomorrow,
Do not waste your precious time in sorrow,
Some paths may be wide and some narrow,

But hope brings you a new tomorrow!

In the legend of Pandora, Pandora simply couldn't resist the temptation of what was inside Pandora's Box. Curiously opening the box, she released all of the world's evils: pride, wrath, sorrow, deceit, misery, glory, cowardice, hate, arrogance, gluttony, envy, vanity, lust, fear, greed, etc.

At the bottom however, underneath all evils, there was hope. It wouldn't abandon humans and hence stayed with them.

All great things in life are simple. Freedom, justice, love, honor, faith, belief and HOPE. People have achieved insurmountable tasks just on the basis of this entity called hope. It can be rightly classified under a divine power, a power which self-motivates a brut to acquire what he desires the most regardless what he faces in his life.

It’s something larger than our imagination… something that extends beyond human comprehension. It’s more like a literary form of our subconscious, isn't it? The mere existence of a possibility… the mere existence of a maybe which helps us keep going. I believe Hope is the only universal liar which has never lost its reputation for its veracity.

Life is full of success and failures… all you can do is keep your head high up. Easier said than done, but the castle of attitude which you build totally depends upon the land of hope which you build on. Isn't it the only thing that you are left with when you have lost everything else?

But it is hard for a blunt instrument to understand, that hope and ego seldom go hand in hand, people tend to become overambitious and overlook the fact that they might kill their basic morale and become derogatory over their actions as well as words. Yet can we disregard the fact that hope, if used properly can create an epiphany even in an exhumed body?

The natural flights of the human mind are not from pleasure or pain… but from hope.

# Happiness, the Search

In the wake of time,
When I start to realize
Every lost dime
Has a worth of its twice.

I am late, to act and to run

In a state, from where nothing seems to be fun.

Within the wake of my mind, I stay scared,

I stay scarred,
With no calm, and peace to bind and from all happiness barred.

Now I look at the sky

No blue… it’s too gray,
Playing the hunt standing so high
But yet to fall as prey.

Wish I could look ahead,

Take back my footsteps,
Wish I could have undone,
Somehow have held back my legs.

Now I see the storm of payback,

But I am done with my past…
To away… please let me last,
No… it wants me to lose more, wants me to cry,
Failing my every bit of effort and every single cry.

Gathering each drop of courage,

Up I stand,
Just to see myself lying in no man’s land.

I wonder what I could lose

I had just stared with nothing left to use.

The storm is away… everything has finished,

It is such a great price,
Nothing to be cherished…
But again, the sun has to rise…
Just figuring out the right start,
This time it’s my people at stake
And also my poor heart.

Mistakes are costly,

Clinging on makes no sense,
The show goes on… but gently,
Till the wind shall bring back the old essence.

Fighting is an art… but should it be a fair chance,

I won’t let it go… will hold it tight,
For that moment out of gloom… to glance
A new morning daylight.

Hope it comes soon,

The door to my perfect paradise,
Not serving any exception,
Rather as the reward of a learner,
With some honour and some pride!
