Week 10- Interpretation 1.0

Breach Candy Hospital
ICU Room No. 1, Bombay
29th August 1982

Outside-Inside

Outside
Black
Granite ugly rocks
Turbulent mud-laden sea
Dark frightening clouds hovering above.

InsideWhiteness, purity
Clean sheets, soft pillows
Gentle care, soft words
Solitude
And my agony.

-Amitabh Bachchan

The poem was later translated to Hindi by Dr Harivansh Rai Bachchan.

Reading between the lines is an art seldom known to all. The true feelings behind a poem are the most elusive of them all.
Reading this poem, the first thoughts in my mind were whether this poem is a product of morphine stoked delirium or a searing clarity experienced due to the poet's trying situation. The fact that the poet chose to describe a negative perception first shows a hint of pessimism if not more, but it also shows that whatever the situation maybe, we are always eager to notice or describe the environment beyond the realm of our mental or physical captivity. Agreed that the suffering of the poet may have played an important role in this thought process.

The harsh description of the 'outside' is a manifestation of the loss of positive approach of the writer. He has resigned to the fragility of his body. Momentarily his position at that instant is much more lucrative than the outside. The world outside threatens his peace of mind. The ICU offers him what he craves the most, detachment. Absolute tranquillity. His mind is fogged with a sense of euphoria. Just as he is basking in this new found peace, reality strikes like thousand knives. The reason he is here comes back to him all at once. Pain. Memories pierce his blanket of warmth shredding it to fragments.
The last line is pivotal. The poet realizes the catch of this situation. His agony is too much of a price to pay for this bubble of perfection and peace.

As I went through the poem, several thoughts flashed in my mind; its sultry representation of a teenager’s life who is hurdling through periodical changes and identity crisis. The world’s pressure urges him to fight with the anonymous. He finds himself drawn into a swamp sucked by a vacuum of loneliness. Whilst, all he seeks is refuge and tranquillity in the “one reliable.”

A better way of interpreting: Just like a dew drop clings to a spider web instead of perishing in the ground; he wants to find solace in the one who wouldn't use him for selfish needs by sweet despising talk. E.g.: The wood which could absorb it.

Outside is the being that is high in neuroticism, low in conscientiousness and extroversion. On the other hand; the inside being has a pessimistic approach –Me against myself.
Still I would like to quote that “Everything comes with an expiry date and so does the days of trial.”

The poem is a depiction of a patient’s feelings, of the place outside and inside. It is dark outside. From where he can see, it is the sea fighting against the rocks near the sea which calm the wrath of the water. Monsoon has just begun and he doesn't like the darkness, the gloominess outside. He feels restless seeing outside. Inside is a much calmer place, the white against the darkness outside has a much calmer effect. He feels the pure and gentle care and the soft words are the hope given by his closed ones which make him strong to cope up with the agony he is going through. In spite of the darkness and gloominess outside, one can find hope; soothing, in small ways and strengthening to overcome difficult times or pain.

In the world, there are numerous bunches of hard arrogant people. They always involve in conflict, creating confusions. If one argument is just about to be resolved, another threatening pulse is waiting uncertainly, ready to create chaos.

But one thing remains unchanged, the serene energy thriving in the body, the soul. It always cleanses one's sins and provides comfort in the time of need. The soul is always there and when one looks for it, unconditional love and care is found.

And there is me, alone and lamenting over this contrast. Trying, with extreme suffering, to find some balance.

Outside, is a scary sight, with the rocks, the brown sea and the dark clouds, indicative of how life takes its course towards what may be perceived as negativity. It is life with its own evil-made packets of sad truths, so full of despair, grief and the depths catapulted towards real or virtual death.
The inside, is probably just an illusion of some relief perhaps, or a way that time pacifies you, with its silence, cushions, care and purity, hinting at some hope or to just mask what's underneath of all the goodness.
But, hopefully, the agony speaks in the solitude, to believe and make believable for self that like every other phase, this moment shall pass on too.
